Drought Relief Campaign
Drought 2017
Al Nasr Relief Agency co-ordinated a fundraising event in response to the drought which affected the north-eastern region of Sanaag. A total of $17,000 was raised during the event in 2017. The funds were distributed across various parts of the region, focusing on providing access to clean drinking water and essential food supplies for affected communities.
Drought 2021/2022
In 2021, Somalia faced a severe and worsening drought after several poor rainy seasons. By late 2021, the situation had become a major humanitarian emergency. By early 2022, the drought had affected 66 out of Somalia’s 74 districts, leaving more than 3.2 million people in distress and without water supplies.
Families were forced to leave their homes in search of water, food, and pasture for livestock. The crisis increased hunger and malnutrition, while livestock losses had a serious impact on livelihoods. Water became more expensive and harder to access and in some areas wells and boreholes dried up, forcing people to travel long distances.
In response, Al Nasr Relief Agency provided urgent financial assistance to support access to water and essential food supplies in north-eastern Somalia. A total of $9,105 was raised to help vulnerable families meet their immediate needs during this period of severe hardship.
An additional $16,385 was raised by the community and distributed to support drought relief efforts in Lascanood, Burco, Wajale, Badhan, Ceelbuh and parts of southern Somalia.
Drought 2025
In 2025, another severe drought affected the region following a prolonged lack of rainfall. In response, Al Nasr Relief Agency contributed £3,490 to support food distribution in the Badhan area.
Al Nasr Relief Agency is working to develop sustainable water sources, such as shallow and deep wells, to help ensure that communities can access clean and safe water in the event of future droughts.
