Shallow Well Projects

Al-Nasr Relief Agency (ANRA) has supported the development of four shallow wells across Northeast Somalia, including Gabi-Dheer, Midigale and Durdur. One additional site in Gurmale was assessed but later abandoned due to insufficient water supply.

This work was completed by ANRA with technical and local support from Hadaf Research Centre, whose expertise helped identify suitable locations and ensure the wells met community needs.

The shallow wells provide vital access to water for nomadic families, livestock, and surrounding rural communities. In areas where people previously travelled long distances to collect water, these wells have helped reduce hardship and improve daily survival during periods of drought.

They have also supported livestock health, strengthened pastoral livelihoods, and reduced pressure on families who depend on animals for food and income.

Future Work

With continued support from donors, ANRA aims to expand shallow well projects across more regions of Somalia. We are also working to develop deeper borehole wells to provide a more sustainable and reliable water supply in areas where shallow wells are not sufficient.
